Is Kratom Legal in Mississippi in 2023?
August 19, 2021Is Kratom Legal in Georgia in 2023?
September 3, 2021Maryland may be a small state, but it has played quite a big role in American history.
Its capital Annapolis is the sailing capital of the world. It has also been the capital of the US for a period of time. In colonial times, it was known as the “Athens of America,” where one could find culture, intellectual stimulation, and social life.
If you’ve been a fan of The Wire, then you know that the show’s events occurred in Baltimore. It’s the largest city in Maryland. For a time, it was the highest-rated TV show on IMDB, and it’s often referred to as the “greatest show ever.”
Maryland may be the home of one of the forgotten capitals in American history. However, it’s making itself known in the kratom community. Let’s find out more.
Is Kratom Legal in Maryland?
Kratom is legal in Maryland. A 2020 bill intended to ban mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, the two primary alkaloids in kratom, in the state. Fortunately, it failed.
Introduced on January 10, 2020, a bill intended to categorize the primary kratom alkaloids as Schedule I substances. This bill would have classified kratom as one of the most dangerous substances in Maryland. It would place kratom alongside LSD, heroin, ecstasy, and peyote, a hallucinogenic herb that may be decriminalized along with kratom in Vermont.
Supporters of this bill suggested that kratom’s similarity to opioids could lead to addiction and abuse. They referred to the FDA’s warnings about kratom. They also mentioned the CDC report on kratom being a possible cause of death in 91 cases.
While this study is frequently used as an argument against kratom, the actual report states that CDC could not rule out other substances. Kratom was only a common factor.
While banning mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine in Maryland could negatively affect numerous kratom buyers in the state, the concern is understandable. Maryland is one of the top five US states with the highest number of opioid overdoses.
Even though kratom has some opioid-like properties, according to a detailed Kratom 8 Factor Analysis, it doesn’t share the dangerous properties of opioids. A representative of the American Kratom Association states that if any adverse results follow a kratom purchase, then it was contaminated or adulterated kratom.
Therefore, kratom advocates suggested that regulating it with the Kratom Consumer Protection Act would be a much better option. Hopefully, that is something that we see in the near future.
How to Prevent a Kratom Ban in Maryland?
Even though the bill aiming to add kratom alkaloids to the controlled substances list didn’t succeed, this can change at any time.
People who oppose kratom are usually very adamant about their willingness to make Mitragyna speciosa products illegal. So, they use every opportunity to label kratom a harmful drug. Nearly any negative instance involving kratom gets in the news, and kratom almost always gets the blame.
While we can’t entirely stop it, we can control our behavior. Therefore, we need to be responsible with kratom. This includes carefully choosing vendors and products and avoid situations that may leave a negative effect on the reputation of kratom.
Another important action we can take is to support the American Kratom Association (AKA), a non-profit activist group. It works to ensure that kratom products remain legal and accessible to buyers.
The FDA wants to ban kratom on a federal level rather than ensure that it’s free from contaminants that can cause health issues. So, the AKA steps in. One of its initiatives is the Kratom Consumer Protection Act or the KCPA. It’s legislation that establishes regulations on kratom and penalties for breaking the law for those who sell it.
Similar to how Mississippi bans kratom one county and one town at a time, the AKA targets individual states. However, it aims to achieve the opposite – ensure safe access to kratom products. Several states including Utah and Nevada have already passed the KCPA. More are considering it.
So, if you’d like to prevent a kratom ban, you can donate and volunteer with the AKA. It can always use your help. You can also regularly check the events in your state, attend hearings, sign relevant petitions, or submit comments on your experience with kratom.
Where to Buy Kratom in Maryland?
Kratom is legal in Maryland. Therefore, it is available in various tobacco shops across the state. Keep in mind, though, that purchasing kratom in local stores comes with certain risks. It can be particularly risky in the states that don’t have any laws that regulate kratom. Unregulated kratom products can contain adulterants, contaminants, and illicit drugs.
As a result, it’s best that you purchase kratom online from established and trustworthy vendors. It increases your chances of getting fresh, pure, and high-quality kratom. Moreover, it can help you save money in the long run.
