In early 2018, the Libertarian Party of Colorado publicly criticized the government for these restrictions and spoke in favor of the herb.

Castle Rock, a municipality within the Denver metropolitan area halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs, also decided to reevaluate its stance on kratom. In late 2018, it imposed a temporary ban on legalizing any new kratom businesses. It intended to last for six months until the Castle Rock authorities made a decision on whether kratom would remain legal in this Colorado town.

In June 2019, Castle Rock town council announced its decision. Kratom remains legal for anyone over the age of 18.

On October 7, 2019, the town of Parker became the first location in Colorado to ban kratom sales. The Parker Town Council justified their decision by siding with the FDA and referred to Mayo Clinic and the poison center complaints about kratom as proof for their decision.

A month later, the town of Monument banned the retail sales of kratom.
